In urban morphology, the term “porosity” dates back to 1925, when Benjamin and Lacis used it to describe Naples. Recently, the term has been revisited by authors highlighting its importance, as well as the challenge of fostering porosity due to its imprecision. This study removes urban and architectural porosity from ambiguity, establishing concepts, criteria, and parameters to evaluate it. By comparing five neighborhoods in Lisbon from different periods, it demonstrates that regulations encourage fragmented and impermeable urban landscapes and suggests pathways for their revision.
