VitaC | The Pre-Joanine Noble House in Lisbon, from Júlio de Castilho to Raul Lino

VitaC | The Pre-Joanine Noble House in Lisbon, from Júlio de Castilho to Raul Lino

Ana Rita Gonçalves Supervised by Prof. João Vieira Caldas

The houses of the court nobility in Lisbon, from the period before the rise of the Joanine Baroque, are almost unknown, despite their importance in the city’s image. Largely overlooked by historiography due to their “plain” style, these buildings were barely studied and their conservation neglected. This presentation explores how they have been viewed since the end of the 19th century, taking as reference the opposing perspectives of Júlio de Castilho and Raul Lino.
